Black Swan Green – David Mitchell

Sometimes you read a book which is so brilliant it reminds you why you got hooked on this writing caper in the first place.  I’ve read a fair few well written books recently, with good characters and a satisfying plot and so forth. But when I picked up Black Swan Green it was like reading used to be like when I was a kid – pulled deep into the story, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the protagonist, laughing with him, feeling sick with dread with him….  The writing style is superb – 1st person narration (my favourite), and an inspired use of vocab which makes you think yes, that’s just how it is (or was – since it’s set in 1982).

David Mitchell, thank you for writing such a beautiful book, and for reminding me what writing – and reading – is all about.  I salute you.  🙂
